Board of Trustees to discuss mid-year student academic data

The 小黄鸭导航 ISD Board of Trustees will review data on middle school student achievement data for reading and math progress at tonight鈥檚 , including very small increases in math scores for economically disadvantaged students.

Student achievement has dropped drastically since the 2018-19 school year, with economically disadvantaged students bearing the brunt of the academic declines. While 16% of economically disadvantaged middle school students were at 鈥淢eets Grade Level鈥 for reading and math in the 2020-21 school year, 53% of the students met their growth target for math and 44% met their growth target for reading.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 want the impact of the pandemic to affect our students' self-esteem,鈥 Chief Academic Officer Elizabeth Casas said. 鈥淭his data gives us a starting point for our students and sets goals to celebrate progress toward getting students back on grade level. Students lost the opportunity to learn because the disruptions of the pandemic, however we are focused on personalizing learning to help them get there.鈥

District leaders will present the latest data from the Middle of the Year MAP Growth assessments, including a comparison to the Beginning of the Year MAP Growth assessments. 

The data is tied to Goal 5 of the , which aims to increase middle school reading and math achievement of 鈥淢eets Grade Level鈥 from 30% to 60% by Aug. 2026. 

Highlights of the data include:

  • A 1% increase in economically disadvantaged African-American and White students who read on grade level.
  • A 2% increase in all special education students who can read on grade level.
  • All students and all economically disadvantaged student groups saw increases in math performance on grade level. That includes a 2% increase for economically disadvantaged African-American students.

The Board will continue having discussions and updates on student achievement data in relation to the scorecard throughout the year.
