Students Read 鈥楧o the Right Thing鈥 Essays on Anniversary of Civil Rights Leader鈥檚 Birth
小黄鸭导航, TX鈥擳his week, the 小黄鸭导航 Independent 小黄鸭导航 District honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the anniversary of his birth鈥擩an. 15, 1929鈥攁nd celebrates the 50th anniversary of the year the civil rights leader delivered his 鈥淚 Have a Dream鈥 speech in Washington, D.C.
Who: Superintendent Meria Carstarphen joins AISD team members and students, including Devin Domino from 小黄鸭导航 High 小黄鸭导航, Cantrell Gains from Travis High 小黄鸭导航 and Keyanna Mack from Kealing Middle 小黄鸭导航.
What: AISD鈥檚 annual celebration of King鈥檚 legacy for central administration team members, featuring students who will read their essays based on the theme, 鈥淒o the Right Thing,鈥 and a musical tribute by the Dobie Middle 小黄鸭导航 choir.
When: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15
Where: AISD Board Auditorium, 1111 W. 6th St.
Background: Each year, the district requests three schools to select students to write essays as an opportunity for the young leaders to share their perspectives about King鈥檚 legacy. This year, the students will read essays based on King鈥檚 quotes, 鈥淣ever, never be afraid to do what鈥檚 right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake,鈥 and 鈥淭he time is always right to do the right thing.鈥
More than 7,500 African American students are enrolled in the district this school year, comprising 8.7 percent of about 86,600 AISD students.
