In the Sparks of Joy series, we鈥檒l meet teachers and staff from around 小黄鸭导航 ISD who exemplify how joy centers our work and shapes our purpose.
We spoke to two amazing teachers in their first year at Langford Elementary 小黄鸭导航鈥擲helby Rooker and Bianca Jimenez鈥攁bout where they鈥檙e seeing 小黄鸭导航 ISD Joy show up in their work. They see it in the moments where there are breakthrough connections with students, in the way they all support each other as a campus community, and in the feeling of knowing they are right where they belong.
Can you tell us about a joyful moment you鈥檝e experienced this year?
鈥淚 have a deck of flashcards for one of my little guys [to help us communicate]. He spoke to me for the first time yesterday. I couldn鈥檛 believe it. It feels like he heard me for the first time. It was just kind of a breakthrough moment for me,鈥 said Rooker, who teaches Kindergarten. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so satisfying at the end of the day to know you鈥檝e made a connection. That鈥檚 why I started doing this.鈥
Bianca Jimenez, Langford's Art teacher, agrees. 鈥淪eeing my students feel proud of something they鈥檝e created and start to believe in themselves, learn that it鈥檚 okay to make mistakes鈥hey remind me that I鈥檓 doing something right. I鈥檓 on the right path. I鈥檓 helping them create art and I鈥檓 creating art with them.鈥
How has your campus community shown up for one another during this transition? (Langford is currently undergoing a full modernization as part of the 2022 Bond.)
鈥淚鈥檝e had such a team of support around me. They validate feelings first, but we鈥檙e not just going to sit in that bad feeling together. We鈥檙e going to work through it. We celebrate every chance we can. We take a lot of time to brag about little things that happen,鈥 said Rooker.
鈥淚鈥檝e seen the teachers here give so much support鈥攏ot just teacher-to-teacher, but teacher-to-student. The strength of our teachers and how they offer so much guidance and support to someone who is new to our campus has been wonderful to see,鈥 said Jimenez.
What is it about the joy in teaching that made you choose this profession?
鈥淛oy in teaching art is witnessing children become artists themselves. I feel like I have a reason to be here, exactly here. I had to meet all of these children. It was planned out that way. I鈥檓 so happy to be their art teacher this year,鈥 said Jimenez.

Hablamos con dos maestras incre铆bles en su primer a帽o en la Escuela Primaria Langford, Shelby Rooker y Bianca Jim茅nez, sobre d贸nde encuentran la 补濒别驳谤铆补 del 小黄鸭导航 ISD en su trabajo. La ven en los momentos en que tienen la primera conexi贸n exitosa con un estudiante, en la manera en que todos se apoyan unos a otros como comunidad escolar y en el sentimiento de saber que est谩n precisamente donde deben estar.
驴Pueden contarnos sobre un momento alegre que hayan tenido este a帽o?
"Tengo un conjunto de tarjetas para uno de mis peque帽itos [que nos ayuda a comunicarnos]. Me habl贸 ayer por primera vez. No lo pod铆a creer. Se siente como si me hubiera o铆do por primera vez. Fue un momento de primera conexi贸n exitosa para m铆", dijo Rooker, que ense帽a K铆nder. "Es tan satisfactorio saber al final del d铆a que has establecido una conexi贸n. Es por eso por lo que empec茅 a hacer esto".
Bianca Jim茅nez, maestra de Arte de Langford, est谩 de acuerdo. "Ver a mis estudiantes sentirse orgullosos de algo que han creado y comenzar a creer en s铆 mismos, aprender que es aceptable cometer errores... me recuerdan que estoy haciendo algo bien. Estoy en el camino correcto. Los estoy ayudando a crear arte y estoy creando arte con ellos".
驴C贸mo se han ayudado unos a otros en su comunidad escolar durante esta transici贸n? (Langford est谩 actualmente siendo completamente modernizada como parte del bono de 2022).
"He tenido un gran equipo de apoyo a mi alrededor. Primero validan mis sentimientos, pero no nos sentamos ah铆 nada m谩s sinti茅ndonos mal juntos. Vamos a trabajar para superarlo. Celebramos en cada oportunidad que tenemos. Pasamos mucho tiempo jact谩ndonos de las peque帽as cosas que pasan", dijo Rooker.
"He visto a los maestros aqu铆 dar tanto apoyo... no solo de un maestro a otro, sino de maestros a estudiantes. Ha sido maravilloso ver la fortaleza de nuestros maestros y la manera en que ofrecen tanta gu铆a y apoyo a alguien nuevo en el plantel escolar", dijo Jim茅nez.
驴Qu茅 parte de la 补濒别驳谤铆补 de ense帽ar las hizo elegir esta profesi贸n?
"La 补濒别驳谤铆补 de ense帽ar arte es ser testigo de ni帽os que se convierten ellos mismos en artistas. Siento que tengo una raz贸n para estar aqu铆, precisamente aqu铆. Ten铆a que conocer a todos estos ni帽os. As铆 estaba planeado. Estoy muy feliz de ser su maestra de arte este a帽o", dijo Jim茅nez.
