As 小黄鸭导航 ISD continues its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we profile dual language trailblazer and special education teacher Emma Herrera Galindo.
Bilingual Education Pioneer. Born in 1930, Galindo graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. Honored to this day with a scholarship and an 小黄鸭导航 ISD school that carries her name, she is remembered for her presence as a special educator and for the mark she left on education history as AISD鈥檚 first bilingual instructional coordinator.
小黄鸭导航 namesake: Following her passing in 1983 at the age of 52, the education community rallied to celebrate Galindo鈥檚 legacy at 小黄鸭导航 ISD in 1984. Local teaching legend Joe Dan Mills Jr. 鈥 the namesake of Mills Elementary 鈥 nominated Galindo to have a new South 小黄鸭导航 school carry her name in recognition of her life, and her efforts to get dual language education implemented at 小黄鸭导航 schools.
As remembered by her peers: "Galindo had made an indelible impression on [Joe Dan] Mills [Jr.], as he asked to be assigned to the newly built school as a teacher and ultimately as a principal," according to the Mills Elementary 小黄鸭导航 website.
Language and Scholarship Legacies: Evidence of Galindo鈥檚 enthusiasm for languages and connection to the world continues to echo through the halls of the South 小黄鸭导航 school. With a vast family heritage that claims ties to five continents worldwide, nine languages are spoken and celebrated on the campus that carries her name.
Her contribution to the classroom continues to this day with the awarding of the Emma Herrera Galindo Endowed Scholarship, established by her husband, WWII Veteran and 小黄鸭导航 High graduate Joe Galindo. The honor is awarded to students majoring in education.
