Un colorido cartel de bienvenida en manos de estudiantes, maestros y el director de la escuela primaria Joslin fue lo primero que vio Silvia Calatayud Ortega cuando reci茅n aterriz贸 en 小黄鸭导航 para iniciar su etapa profesional como maestra en los Estados Unidos de Am茅rica, luego de casi dos d茅cadas de experiencia en su natal Espa帽a.
Este emotivo recibimiento en el Aeropuerto de 小黄鸭导航 la llen贸 de alegr铆a y energ铆a para esta nueva aventura junto a su familia en la capital texana. 鈥淓n Joslin me han dado una acogida extraordinaria鈥, comenta.
La maestra Silvia prefiere que la llamen por su nombre y lleva un par de meses impartiendo clases en el programa de Lenguaje Dual, pero cuenta con una amplia trayectoria en el campo docente. 鈥淵o siempre ten铆a bien claro que quer铆a ser maestra, desde peque帽a鈥, dice la maestra de k铆nder.
Naci贸 en Alicante, Espa帽a, ciudad portuaria en el sureste de ese pa铆s. Ah铆 se recibi贸 como educadora y reuni贸 casi 20 a帽os de experiencia en el aula hasta que le lleg贸 la invitaci贸n para continuar su carrera en 小黄鸭导航, Texas.
La maestra Silvia recibi贸 el apoyo de su esposo y de sus tres hijas en su decisi贸n de viajar a otro pa铆s para aportar sus conocimientos profesionales y al mismo tiempo aprender del distrito escolar de 小黄鸭导航. Esta es la primera vez que ella y su familia viven fuera de Espa帽a.
鈥淵o siempre digo que es una inversi贸n de vida, no la veo como una inversi贸n econ贸mica鈥, expresa sobre su cambio de residencia, 鈥測 aunque el proceso de mudarse de continente puede ser muy abrumador, nuestra llegada por primera vez a 小黄鸭导航 fue muy especial鈥.
Llegada a 小黄鸭导航
La maestra Silvia y su familia llegaron el 21 de julio al Aeropuerto de 小黄鸭导航, donde se encontraron con una sorpresa muy agradable: el director de la Escuela Primaria Joslin, ChaoLin Chang y un grupo de la comunidad escolar los recibieron con mucha emoci贸n. Una de las personas clave en la integraci贸n de la maestra Silvia al 小黄鸭导航 ISD es la maestra Blanca G谩lvez-P茅rez, colega de la primaria Andrews y representante de la Asociaci贸n del 脕rea de 小黄鸭导航 para la Educaci贸n Biling眉e (AAABE, por sus siglas en ingl茅s).
La maestra Silvia inscribi贸 a sus tres hijas de sexto, cuarto y primer grado, en escuelas del 小黄鸭导航 ISD. A pesar de que todo el proceso de mudanza corri贸 sin contratiempos, dice que el reto m谩s grande fue el idioma y poder realizar todos los tr谩mites telef贸nicos necesarios para poder establecerse en la ciudad.
鈥淔ue un desaf铆o grande para nosotros, pero creo que afortunadamente pudimos arreglar todo, espero que todo est茅 en regla鈥, a帽ade.
En el sal贸n de clases
El plan que tiene la maestra Silvia para este ciclo escolar es que sus estudiantes puedan comenzar a entender el espa帽ol, ya que ella ense帽a el programa de Lenguaje Dual Ingl茅s-Espa帽ol de dos v铆as y la mayor铆a de su alumnado tiene el ingl茅s como lengua materna. La primaria Joslin tambi茅n ofrece el programa de Lenguaje Dual Ingl茅s-Chino Mandar铆n.
鈥淒ar茅 el 100 por ciento e intentar茅 que alcancen lo m谩ximo posible鈥, dice la maestra Silvia y resalta lo interesante de la oferta acad茅mica de la primaria Joslin, que la motiva a capacitarse constantemente con las opciones de desarrollo profesional del distrito, para poder ofrecer la mejor calidad en su ense帽anza.
El proceso
La idea de mudarse al extranjero, en este caso a Estados Unidos, no naci贸 de la noche a la ma帽ana. La maestra Silvia ya contemplaba la idea de hacerlo, pero este a帽o ella se decidi贸 a dar ese paso y aplic贸 por una de las plazas que ofrece el Ministerio de Espa帽a bajo un programa de intercambio cultural que ofrece cada a帽o para ir a diferentes partes de Estados Unidos. Para formar parte del proceso de intercambio se tienen que cumplir ciertos requisitos.
鈥淢e da mucha satisfacci贸n estar aqu铆 porque es un proceso duro, no es f谩cil. Es un proceso que lleva muchos meses y se presentan miles de personas en Espa帽a, y al final ser t煤 la que encaja con ese perfil o la que cumple con los requisitos鈥 para m铆 fue una satisfacci贸n muy grande鈥, agrega la maestra Silvia.
Una vez que los elegidos califican para el programa, solo se puede elegir el estado a donde quieren mudarse en Estados Unidos. El programa asigna la ciudad y el distrito escolar. 鈥淓s una buena oportunidad y experiencia a nivel profesional pero tambi茅n a nivel personal, creo que son experiencias que te abren la mente鈥, agrega.
Consejo
El mudarse y dejar todo atr谩s puede causar miedo y es algo normal, pero es una experiencia que vale la pena para la maestra Silvia.
鈥淐reo que hay que abrir la mente y decir `隆venga!麓 hay m谩s mundo afuera y m谩s realidades, hay otras formas de aprender, hay otras formas de ense帽ar鈥, dice la nueva maestra de Joslin y anima a otras personas que tengan similares metas y que las hagan realidad.
鈥淵o me levanto todos los d铆as con ganas de ir al trabajo, creo que es una cosa fundamental y una satisfacci贸n muy grande鈥, concluye con una gran sonrisa.

小黄鸭导航 ISD welcomes teacher Silvia Calatayud

A colorful welcome sign in the hands of students, teachers and the principal of Joslin Elementary 小黄鸭导航 was the first thing Silvia Calatayud Ortega saw when she recently landed in 小黄鸭导航 to begin her professional career as a teacher in the United States, after almost two decades of experience in her native Spain.
This emotional welcome at the 小黄鸭导航 airport filled her with joy and energy for this new adventure with her family in the capital of Texas. "Joslin has given me an extraordinary welcoming," she says.
The teacher who prefers to be called by her first name, Silvia, has been teaching in the Dual Language program for a couple of months, but she has a long history in the field of teaching. "It was always clear to me that I wanted to be a teacher, ever since I was a little girl," says the kindergarten teacher.
She was born in Alicante, Spain, a port city in the southeastern part of the country. There she graduated as a preschool teacher and spent almost 20 years in the classroom until she was invited to continue her career in 小黄鸭导航, Texas.
Silvia received the support from her husband and three daughters in her decision to travel to another country to share her professional knowledge and at the same time learn from the 小黄鸭导航 school district. This is the first time she and her family have lived outside of Spain.
"I always say it's a life investment, I don't see it as a financial investment," she says of her change of residency. "And while the process of moving to a new continent can be very overwhelming, our arrival in 小黄鸭导航 for the very first time was very special."
Arrival in 小黄鸭导航
Silvia and her family arrived at the airport in 小黄鸭导航 on July 21, where they were met with a very pleasant surprise: Joslin Elementary 小黄鸭导航 Principal ChaoLin Chang and a group from the school community greeted them with great enthusiasm. One of the key people in Silvia's integration into 小黄鸭导航 ISD is teacher Blanca Galvez-Perez, a colleague at Andrews Elementary and representative of the 小黄鸭导航 Area Association for Bilingual Education (AAABE).
Silvia enrolled her three daughters in sixth, fourth and first grade in 小黄鸭导航 ISD schools. Although the whole moving process went smoothly, she says the biggest challenge was the language and being able to make all the necessary phone arrangements to settle in the city.
"It was a big challenge for us, but I think fortunately we were able to arrange everything, I hope everything is in order," she adds.
In the classroom
Silvia's plan for this school year is for her students to begin to understand Spanish, as she teaches in the two-way English-Spanish Dual Language program and most of her students are native English speakers. Joslin Elementary also offers the Dual Language English-Mandarin Chinese program.
"I will be dedicated 100 percent and I will try to make them achieve their best," says Silvia and highlights the interesting academic offerings at Joslin Elementary, which motivates her to constantly receive on-going training with the district's professional development options, so that she can offer the best quality in her teaching.
The process
The idea of moving abroad, in this case to the United States, was not conceived overnight. Silvia was already contemplating the idea of doing so, but this year she decided to take that step and applied for one of the positions offered by the Ministry of Spain under a cultural exchange program offered every year to go to different parts of the United States. To be part of the exchange process, certain requirements must be met.
"It is very satisfying for me to be here because it is a difficult process, it is not easy. It is a process that takes many months and thousands of people in Spain apply. And in the end, you are the one who fits the profile or who meets the requirements... for me it was a great satisfaction," adds Silvia.
Once those selected and qualify for the program, they only get to choose the state where they want to relocate to in the U.S. The program assigns the city and school district. "It's a good opportunity and experience on a professional level but also on a personal level. I think they are mind-opening experiences," she adds.
Advice
Moving and leaving everything behind can be daunting and this is normal, but it is a worthwhile experience for Silvia.
"I think you have to open your mind and say `come on!' there is more world out there and more realities, there are other ways to learn, there are other ways to teach," says Joslin's new teacher and encourages others who have similar goals to make them a reality.
"I wake up every day looking forward to going to work, I think that is something fundamental and very satisfying," she concludes with a big smile.
